928 Developments camshaft and valve spring packages are specifically targeted to optimize power and torque for your particular engine combination. The selection of camshafts that have been available for the 928 32 valve engine variants have been limited and very general in their application. A cam set for your 6.5L 5 speed track car should have very different timing events than one for a stock S4 with AT. We are offering a wider variety of sets to suit the different applications. Many of these cam sets are suitable for a combination of street and track use. The proper selection for your engine combination can provide higher horsepower and a wider torque band, with good mileage and emissions outputs that are within legal limits. It is vital for you to realize that the 32 valve 928 engine with it's flow characteristics provide for such a broad power band that cams that are used for racing can also make for excellent street cams. The key is to create the proper combination of cam timing, intake, exhaust, engine management and other specs that give that kind of flexibility. The matching of camshafts and valve springs is critical to the production of power and to engine reliability. Insufficient valve spring pressure can allow the valvetrain to float over the nose of the cam or bounce on the seat instead of closing and sealing the combustion chamber properly. The manifestations of these problems are typically mysterious power losses and odd wear patterns, even failures, of the camshaft. We have sourced several different valve spring designs that will have the appropriate pressures to avoid these problems and again, this is not the one part fits all approach that has been so common to this point. The following camshaft sets and packages are in a very active state of development and we encourage you to discuss with us your particular needs. For your reference, here are the factory timing specifications for several engines:
Camshaft Packages: Level I Level I camshaft sets are based on some of the factory 928 cam lobes and design. The exception is the "402" lobe, but it is a very close cousin of the factory lobes and complements them very well. The approach of mixing different 928 lobes to change the power generating characteristics of a particular engine is exactly what the Porsche factory has done through the years in production, as you can see from the comparison chart above. The Level I sets are therefore going to generally maintain running qualities such as idle and power curves similar to the factory engines, but with significant improvements.
928-LI-4CS1 Camshaft set: $2049.00 928-LI-4CS1-P package with springs: $2469.00
928-LI-4CS2 Camshaft set: $2049.00 928-LI-4CS2-P package with springs: $2469.00
928-LI-4CS3 Camshaft set: $2149.00 928-LI-4CS3-P package with springs: $2569.00
928-LI-4CS4 Camshaft set: $2149.00 928-LI-4CS4-P package with springs: $2569.00 Camshaft Packages: Level II With the Level II camshaft sets we depart from the factory 928 cam lobes in order to make more power and that will generally result in a higher operating rpm to achieve it. That is not necessarily the case however, and we will demonstrate with these sets that you can set the intake camshaft centerline in such a way that you will have increased torque and power throughout an operating range of 2500 to 7000 rpm. We have extensive experience and success with dyno testing camshaft set designs of this type and they will prove to be just as outstanding in the 928 as they were in other 4 valve DOHC V-8 engines. These sets can be timed for broad torque or large mid and top end power gains. It’s your choice, just tell us what you want and the “airflow package” that you intend to create for your engine. The Level II sets will alter the running qualities such as idle and power curves more significantly than the Level I sets, but will not be too radical for everyday driving and reliability. They will give a more intense “edge” to your engine’s performance, and are the cams that we intend to run in our street cars. They will all require the VSS-003 spring set.
928-LII-4CS1 Camshaft set: $2249.00 928-LII-4CS1-P package with springs: $2669.00
928-LII-4CS2 Camshaft set: $2249.00 928-LII-4CS2-P package with springs: $2669.00
928-LII-4CS3 Camshaft set: $2349.00 928-LII-4CS3-P package with springs: $2769.00 Camshaft Packages: Level III The Level III camshaft sets are recommended for competition in racing 928 engines. The Level III cams will use hydraulic lifters, which will generally have an rpm limit of 7500 rpm with the appropriate valve spring rates. Our Level IV camshaft sets will be for solid lifter cams, which will give a power and rpm advantage for those interested in that advantage. More Level III sets will be added as the demand grows and we will work with you to tailor the camshaft timing to your engine’s specific needs.
928-LIII-4CS1 Camshaft set: $2449.00 928-LIII-4CS1-P package with springs: $2869.00
928-LIII-4CS2 Camshaft set: $2549.00 928-LIII-4CS2-P package with springs: $2969.00 Camshaft Packages: Level IV Level IV camshaft packages are being prepared now and will debut in the 928 Developments titanium valve cylinder heads. These mechanical follower cam sets that will provide very serious race track power levels as we move into the 600+ naturally aspirated hp ranges. We have much of the work done for these sets, and could provide them sooner per your request. * All prices are subject to change without notice. Prices for camshaft sets are all based upon your exchange camshaft core set in rebuild able condition and for the same model engine. |
